一如賢人安然逝去，(As virtuous men pass mildly away,)
魂魄聽從耳語離去，(And whisper to their souls to go,)
正當悲慟友人不免感嘆(Whilst some of their sad friends do say)
氣息已逝，其餘則說：不然。(The breath goes now, and some say, No:)

故讓我消融，莫發一語，(So let us melt, and make no noise,)

地動說的劇變與恐懼，(Moving of th' earth brings harms and fears,)

凡俗的戀愛(Dull sublunary lovers' love)

安妮·多恩，英國詩人約翰·多恩的髮妻，他們歷經千辛萬苦終成佳偶，然而約翰旅歐前的分離依舊讓安妮心碎，但是安妮那多愁善感又見多識廣的丈夫卻頌了一首長詩，只為止住安妮擔憂的淚水。他浪漫的狡辯聽來如此合理，兩人渺小的愛情居然比擬星體的輪轉，他闡述著，宏大的愛情並非是軀體的交融，而是銘刻在靈魂裡的火鍊之跡。

倘若一雙人，恰如(If they be two, they are two so)
圓規的兩腳成雙；(As stiff twin compasses are two;)
你的靈魂，是停駐的腳，信念堅定，(Thy soul, the fixed foot, makes no show)
但你依然，奉相對的腳，隨之迴旋。(To move, but doth, if the other do.)

此腳佇立於中央，(And though it in the center sit,)
彼腳相對地遊蕩，(Yet when the other far doth roam,)
它會傾身聆聽耳語，(It leans and hearkens after it,)
待彼回歸，兩腳成雙。(And grows erect, as that comes home.)

約翰的肉身即使離開英國，他的靈魂仍與摯愛相連，遠行的他終會回到安妮的身邊，「請別悲傷。」是約翰留給安妮的道別，因為思念不會化作淚滴，深遠的愛是約翰的信念，讓他始終環繞著安妮運轉，而天體終將返回旅途最初的起點。

一如我之於你，便是(Such wilt thou be to me, who must,)
那相對的、迴旋的腳；(Like th' other foot, obliquely run;)
你的堅信畫成圓，(Thy firmness makes my circle just,)
